Already inhabited in the Villanova era, it attained its greatest splendor between the sixth and fifth century BC. The town, whose site is now occupied by the medieval and modern city, had several sacred bui
ldings, including the Temple of the Belvedere, which may have been dedicated to \b \cf4 \ATXht3030 Tinia\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 (= Zeus, Jupiter). Of particular interest among the \b \cf1 \ATXht14 necropolises\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 are that of <<Crocefisso del Tufo
>> with its regular urban-style layout and that of the <<Cannicella,>> where the tombs are adapted to follow the morphology of the terrain and are often built on top of one another. Several painted tombs and the remains of important sacred buildings have
been found in the surrounding region. The city was gradually abandoned over the course of the third century BC.\par
